Explore Borneo with Alasdair Clayre
Join the ETV Endowment for this trip of a lifetime with Alasdair Clayre, host of five ETV Endowment trips to England, France, Scotland, Italy and the Alps. Alasdair was born in Borneo and is a member of one of the highland tribes of Sarawak. He earned his MPhil in Anthropology at Cambridge and is currently researching community conservation plans for the highlands.
Fabled for its mystical mountains and exotic wildlife, headhunting tribes and White Rajahs, the island of Borneo has long fired the imagination of intrepid travelers. It was near Kuching that the adventurer James Brooke landed in 1841 and founded his own country. Here, too, Alfred Russel Wallace first developed his Sarawak Law, a precursor to the theory of evolution, prompting Darwin to publish.
We will journey through the Malaysian States of Sabah, “The Land below the Wind,” and Sarawak, famed for its indigenous diversity. Both boast UNESCO World Heritage National Parks. We will cruise up isolated rivers through pristine mangroves and rainforest, searching for orangutans, pigmy elephants, carnivorous pitcher plants and flying frogs. We will savor oriental delicacies and discover tribal cultures. We will also visit the vibrant and contrasting cities of Kota Kinabalu and Kuching.
Our travel dates are March 14-27, 2019, with a price per traveler of $5,219, which includes a $1,000 tax-deductible donation to the ETV Endowment. The single supplement is $625. Please see the complete itinerary and registration form.
